Corfu is bigger than it looks on a map, and how you plan to move around it shapes the whole holiday. There is no single right answer — it depends on where you are staying, how much you want to see, and how much of your day you are willing to spend waiting. Here is what each option actually gets you.
The Bus Network
Corfu has two separate bus systems, and the distinction confuses a lot of first-time visitors.
- Blue buses cover Corfu Town and the immediate suburbs — Kanoni, Gouvia, Achilleion and the near villages. Frequent, cheap, and genuinely useful if you are based in or near the town.
- Green buses are the long-distance network, running from the terminal in Corfu Town out to the resorts and villages: Paleokastritsa, Sidari, Kassiopi, Glyfada and so on.
The catch with the green network is that it radiates from Corfu Town. Getting from one coastal village to another often means travelling in to the terminal and out again, which can turn a twenty-minute drive into most of a morning. Frequencies also drop sharply outside peak season and on Sundays.
Best for: budget travel, a base near Corfu Town, and single day trips to major destinations.
Taxis
Taxis are readily available in Corfu Town, at the airport and port, and in the larger resorts. They are straightforward for short hops and for evenings out.
For longer journeys the cost adds up quickly, and outside the main centres you generally cannot flag one down — you need to call or ask a hotel or taverna to arrange it. Getting back from a remote beach late in the day is where people most often get caught out.
Best for: short distances, evenings, and airport runs if you are travelling light and staying close.
Private Transfers
A pre-booked transfer is a fixed price for a named journey, usually airport or port to accommodation, with a driver waiting on arrival.
The value here is not really the vehicle — it is not having to negotiate anything after a flight, having the price settled in advance, and having a vehicle sized for your luggage and group. For families, groups, late arrivals and anyone staying far from the airport, it removes the single most stressful part of the trip.
Best for: arrivals and departures, groups with luggage, and remote accommodation.
Car Hire
A rental car is the only option that gives you the whole island. The beaches that make Corfu worth visiting more than once — the coves below Paleokastritsa, the south-coast dunes, the northeast bays, the mountain villages — are mostly unserved or badly served by buses.
The trade-offs are real, though. Parking in Corfu Town is difficult in season, the mountain and coastal descents are narrow and demanding, and you are responsible for the vehicle for the length of the hire.
Best for: stays of several days or more, exploring beyond the resorts, families, and anyone visiting in shoulder season when bus frequencies drop.
A Practical Rule of Thumb
- Staying in or near Corfu Town for a few days? Buses and the occasional taxi will cover you.
- Staying in one resort and mostly using its beach? A transfer in and out, plus a couple of taxi trips, is usually enough.
- Want to see more than two or three places? Hire a car. The bus network will cost you more in hours than the rental costs in money.
- Arriving late or with a lot of luggage? Book the transfer regardless of what you do afterwards.
Mixing Options
Plenty of visitors do best with a combination: a private transfer on arrival and departure, then a rental car for the middle portion of the stay when they actually want to explore. It avoids paying for a vehicle sitting idle on arrival day and removes the airport hassle at both ends.
